Shop Local Christmas Gift Ideas

The holidays are right around the corner and, if you're like me, you're probably tired of shopping at big box stores to find a gift. Dragging yourself through the crowed malls with other folks doing the same thing. Fighting over the newest latest toy that will lose it's excitement by Dec. 26th. Settling on items that you think someone might like but you're not really sure or just getting something, anything, because you're just plumb out of ideas. Because come on, really, who needs another nose hair trimmer or a Chia Pet.

As knitters and crocheters, we're always primed and ready for a handmade gift but what if it's December 23rd and you just don't have time to pop out a hat or scarf?

Here's a list of some fantastic ideas for quick and meaningful gifts that you can even wait until the last minute to get (and you probably won't even have to wrap it!):

A Gift Certificate for services to:
a local hairdresser
a local Garage for oil changes
get their car washed and detailed
get their driveway sealed
get their lawn mowed or snow removed
get their home cleaned by a local cleaning person
get their computer serviced

A Gift Certificate to have fun by:
trying out a local restaurant, or maybe an old favorite (Be sure to leave your server a big tip!)
play a round of golf at the local golf course
going to a local tourist attraction that they've never been to
staying at a local bed and breakfast
going to see a play

Looking for something a little more tangible than a gift certificate? Don't forget your local crafters! Potters, woodworkers, soap makers, jewelry makers, blacksmiths, and bookbinders just to name a few! I bet you can even find locally made one of a kind toys for the little ones on your gift list this year.

Don't forget about our local farmers and foodies! How about a nice bottle of local wine or beer from a local brewery? You could even gift someone a membership to the local Community Supported Agriculture program or get them a gift certificate to the farmer's market.

This Holiday season, lets give our communities a big gift by shopping local, spending local, and celebrating local. Every dollar you spend at a local store, http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifrestaurant, or for local services stays right there in the community. The more money in your community, the more your community will thrive and opportunity will grow.

BTW, We have Gift Certificates here at A Likely Yarn!

For more information about how shopping local affects your community check out The 3/50 Project.

Cassie & Kristine's Yarn Favorite - Malabrigo

October 14, 2011 is I Love Yarn! Day. Until then we'll be highlighting shop employees' favorite yarns both on the blog and at the shop.

This week we have a display of Cassie & Kristine's yarn favorite which is Malabrigo.

Here's what they have to say about Malabrigo:

Oh Malabrigo, How I love thee!

I’m pretty sure that Malabrigo is the answer to world peace. How could one want to start a war when you’re holding something so deliciously soft?!

And the colors! Such beautiful deep colors! You could get lost staring at it all day!

It’s a perfect sweater yarn because it feels so nice next to the skin. (Don’t blame me if you end up wanting to make yourself a set of footie pajamas with a hood so you can be covered head to toe in super cuddly softness.)

It’s also perfect for accessories! Snuggle up in a hat & cowl? Yes please! Wrap my hands in that kind of softness? I couldn’t think of anything better!

Malabrigo is yummy. Yum yum yum!

UFO Help

We're not talking about flying saucers and the little green men from Mars; UFO stands for Un-Finished Objects.

Sometimes, our knitting patterns, that seemed so straight forward when we started, morph into something that is suddenly written in a different language. Sometimes, we make a mistake and make more of a mess trying to fix it. Sometimes, you're at your wits end and you simply need a second opinion.

We're here to help!! Twice a month, we have two hour blocks of UFO Help. Bring in the project that you're stuck on and we'll get you over the hurdle and back to knitting like the wind.

Our UFO Help times for July are Thursday July 14 from 11:00-1:00 and Wednesday July 27 from 11:00-1:00.

Let us help you get in the Christmas mood!

Learn to make a felted Christmas stocking. Meet July 9th to get started knitting, on July 23rd to felt your stocking, and July 30th learn to needle felt a design onto your stocking. Class meets from 1-3.

Yarn Price Increases

Please be aware that due to inflation of gas prices, shipping cost, fiber prices, and production costs, many yarn companies are raising their prices as of June 1. We are seeing price increases from 10-30% depending on the fiber content.

The most notable of prices increases are yarns containing silk and cashmere. Cotton prices have raised as well. Wool prices have increased with superwash wools having a higher percentage increase.

Our largest line is Plymouth Encore which will be raising from $5.50 to $6.00 and $6.00 to $6.50 for Colorspun.

Also, some companies are reducing the amount of yardage of a skein to combat the increase in prices.

We currently have lots of stock available at the older prices but as new stock comes in these prices will be increasing. On a positive note, Skacel lowered the prices on some of their yarns to offset the increase on others.

Chix With Sticks With The Miss Babs Crew

We would like to give a big thanks to Jen and Helen from Miss Babs for coming over to hang out with us during Chix with Sticks. And, Congratulations to Carmen who won the door prize which was a lovely skein of Yet in a beautiful blue.

WWKIP Week Contest

It's that time of year again when the sun is shining and begging you to come out and play. But what's a knitter to do?? We've been in our recliners knitting away in the shadows of our yarn filled dens; Dare we venture out to play in the sun?

We've got the perfect solution to transition you to the outside world!

June 11-19 is the World Wide Knit In Public Celebration.

We want to encourage you to get out there and knit!

Between these dates, (6/11 & 6/19) we would love to see photos of you knitting in public. These don't have to be fancy set up photo shoots, just a simple snap shot will do!

What we would like is a photo of you knitting in a public place (library, restaurant, grocery store, gas station, Anywhere!) along with a little information - Where you're knitting, what you're knitting, and maybe what yarn you're using.

So what's in it for you? Well, other than the joy of knitting in public, your name will be put in our fishbowl for a chance to win a lovely prize package from us that includes an A Likely Yarn tee shirt, an A Likely Yarn needle case, and A Likely Yarn tote bag, and a one time use %15 off your entire purchase coupon. How cool is that?!?

Now for the rules: Photos may be submitted between 6/11 and 6/20 at midnight est. Please use photos taken during the WWKIP dates and not previously taken photos. Each person's name will be entered only once though we do encourage you to send multiple photos. Winner's name will be drawn on Tuesday 6/21. It is recommended to send your photo's via email to alikelyyarn@yahoo.com but Facebook submissions are also acceptable. If you would like to drop off a photo at the shop, be sure to leave contact information so we can contact you if you're the winner. Also, if you would like to be contacted by a means other than email, please send that information along with your photo. Please note, we plan to post your photo(s) to our blog and facebook and by sending us the photo we are assuming that you are giving us permission to do so.

CEY Yarn Tasting

Tuesday, we had three groups of yarn tasters. Each group was able to choose several mini skeins to test knit or crochet from Classic Elite Yarns including Cricket, Premiere, Allegoro, Soft Linen, Classic Silk, Katydid, and Seedling. There were oooh's, ahhh's, laughter, and nibbles of a few yummy goodies. There was all kinds of swatching going on and we've had reports that the swatching fun kept some of our yarn tasters up until the wee hours of the morning!

Each group had a drawing for a door prize of one CEY yarn bag, a pattern, and yarn for the project. Carmen was very excited about her door prize!

Were you not able to join us for the Yarn Tasting event? Don't worry!! We have yarn tasting bags available here at the store. There are only a few left so you may want to drop by ASAP. Each bag contains 5 mini skeins, salt water taffy provided by CEY, and a coupon for 10% off one CEY purchase that is usable through April 30th.
